Nonna already had her puttanesca sauce simmering on the stove for dinner the evening we arrived. A nice evening of dinner with Nonna, Zia Connie, and Uncle Bill.
Saturday morning Marco's cousin Luciana picked us up and we spent the day in the city's historic centre. Then Luciana's fiance, Roberto joined us for lunch. We enjoyed some drinks and pizza and then hit a popular pasticceria for coffee and dessert - where Marco jumped to his go to, baba, and then discovered Nutella filled baba. I went for my favorite, sfogliatella, a flaky pastry filled with orange zest flavored sweet ricotta.
Roberto, being the historian that he is, loves to tell us about the ancient underground city of Naples. This trip we toured the recently excavated Bourbon Tunnel. It was originally built in 1853 as an escape route from the Royal Palace and was also part of the city's underground aqueduct system. The tunnel was then used as air raid shelters during WWII and then an impound lot in the 1970's. Old cars, motorcycles from the war, and children's toys were among the things found.
After the tunnel tour we roamed more of the city, hit some shops and then headed back to Nonna's in Portici. Stuffed from our day of eating around Naples - use your stereotyping to envision Nonna still insisting on serving us up massive slices of lasagna and some meatballs.
We ended the evening around the T.V. drinking wine and watching Italian singing shows.
